Board Development
Board operation through prayer, discernment, and governance

What is the role of a church board?
A team entrusted to represent God to His people—discerning rather than deciding, governing rather than controlling—as they lead the church forward in God’s mission for the sake of His Kingdom.
We believe that a board will serve most effectively when they keep a Kingdom perspective and are willing to function in a manner of discerning where the Holy Spirit leads and directs rather than relying on human decision-making.
The GLR’s role is to support and equip the local church board to understand the importance and uniqueness of their role and to encourage them to keep their eyes fixed on the vision and mission to which God is calling them, their lead pastor, and their church.

Plan a Retreat
Empower your church board for effective leadership by committing to an intentional season of equipping and training. Choose a weekend away or book out a Saturday.
GOAL: For the governing body of the church to move from deciding to discerning God’s will by taking the necessary step of growing in the knowledge of each other and the principles of discerning in the community.
Walk Through a book together with guided discussion
Pair your intentional time together by walking through one of our recommended resources. Through insightful discussions about what you are learning and purposeful training, you can equip your team with the tools and strategies needed to navigate the unique challenges and opportunities facing your congregation.
We encourage Boards to read the book “Pursuing God’s Will Together” by Ruth Haley Barton and work through this book together as a team. This book provides a trustworthy process that enables Christian leaders to actively seek God together.
